March & April in Mrs Alcorn’s Year 4
Year 4 Spring Adventures – March & April Highlights
What a fantastic and action-packed term it’s been for our brilliant Year 4 pupils! March and April have been full of hands-on learning, new experiences, and exciting opportunities to explore the world around us. Here are just some of the highlights!
World Book Day – Reading to Primary 1
Year 4 were thrilled to celebrate World Book Day by becoming reading buddies for our Primary 1 pupils. With their favourite books in hand, they shared stories, sparked imaginations, and helped our younger children discover the joy of reading. It was a lovely morning of laughter and learning.
Young Enterprise – Learning About Our Town
As part of our Young Enterprise programme, Year 4 learned about the world of work and community life. From discovering how businesses operate to understanding the role of government and taxes, the children gained valuable insights into how our town works and why everyone’s contribution matters.
Ulster Scots Workshop – Weaving Culture and Creativity
We had a wonderful session with the Ulster Scots Agency. The highlight was designing and creating our very own tartan patterns – a colourful and creative way to connect with local heritage.
Mandarin Funday – A Taste of Chinese Language and Culture
Year 4 also enjoyed a brilliant Mandarin funday, where they were introduced to the basics of the Mandarin language through games, songs, and fun activities.
Numeracy – Division and Fractions
In Numeracy, we’ve been focusing on division and fractions. Through practical tasks and group challenges, pupils have been building strong foundations in these important areas of maths – and having great fun while doing it!
Literacy – World War 2 Evacuation Diaries
Year 4 have been exploring the experiences of evacuees during World War 2 through powerful diary writing. Their entries were full of emotion and detail, showing a real understanding of what life was like for children during the war.
World Around Us – The Belfast Blitz, The Blackout and Rationing
Our WAU topic took us back to wartime Belfast, where the children learned about the Blitz, blackout restrictions, and the challenges of rationing. We even tried out a wartime recipe by making our own carrot cookies – simple ingredients, but surprisingly tasty!
Friendship and Fun with Other Schools
This term, Year 4 had the chance to meet new friends from Holy Family’s Year 4 class during a brilliant morning at the Grange Park. They also enjoyed an afternoon of fun activities at Hill at the High. These shared experiences were full of smiles, teamwork, and new friendships.
We’re so proud of everything Year 4 have achieved this term – from history and heritage to language and literacy, they’ve thrown themselves into every opportunity with energy and enthusiasm. Well done, everyone – we can’t wait for what’s next!
