OCPS achieves PATHS Model School status!

16th Oct 2018

Omagh County PS is delighted to have been awarded PATHS Model School status at a PATHS Celebration in the Manor House on Wednesday 10th October 2018.

The PATHS (Promoting Alternative THinking Strategies) is an international state-of-the-art programme designed for schools to facilitate the development of self-control, emotional awareness and interpersonal problem-solving skills.

The teaching of PATHS is a structured whole school approach covering the following units every year from P1 to P7

  • Emotional understanding
  • Self-control
  • Social problem solving
  • Peer relations and self-esteem.

Educational research indicates that following the PATHS programme has a very positive impact on teaching children effective strategies to cope with stressful situations, building resilience, raising academic outcomes and making pupils happier.

This initiative was led in Omagh County PS by Mrs Alcorn. All the teachers, classroom assistants and supervisory assistants have had PATHS training ensuring PATHS approaches are followed daily in the classroom and playground. This innovative approach has increased pupil self-esteem, confidence, independence and problem solving skills . Parents also participated in parental workshops and were extremely positive about the implementation of the programme in school.

We are extremely grateful to our PATHS coaches for their mentoring, dedication and professionalism during

the past 4  years at Omagh County PS.

We hope you enjoy the photographs taken at the PATHS Celebration Event held in the Manor House Hotel and the homecoming!
